Pawel Dziadur

Agrounia1: Traitors of the Countryside,

Acrylic and plastic Jacquard knit, steel, computer, Arduino & DIY electronics, camera, motor, speaker, custom Arduino, C++ and Max/MSP software

305 x 244 cm

POLISH MEMORY

The knitted Jacquard shows a montage of a reworked nature and wildlife scene directly inspired by a medieval tapestry from the royal collection in Krakow, Poland and some graffiti appropriated from an alt-right organisation that fought against recent legislation banning the fur industry and updating animal welfare legislation in Poland (November 2020). The knitted graffiti element says “Pawel Papke (name of MP), traitor of the countryside works here”, and hundreds of MPs were stigmatised in a similar manner that is reminiscent of brutal fascist tactics from the past. The minority alt-right organization in question, Agrounia, was is in fact sponsored by the Russian Federation and tried to deploy an anti-European narrative similar to the one used by Nigel Farage and Brexit agitators in the UK.

The rotating camera reads the textile and converts it to sound as if it were a spectrogram. However, because the textile does not contain a representation of a specific sound, it produces some form of noise.
